A learning community

the context of learning — How do we want to learn?

At the Essex Center we take the concept of a learning community seriously. Experiencing and participating in such a learning environment brings it to life for participants. It is at the core of our teaching.  

Although the Essex Center is currently a private practice, both the private practice and the online content through this website and YouTube videos and playlists support the idea that learning is both solitary and communal.


Therefore, together all participants and staff members co-create a learning community, which means: 


  • We each take responsibility for the learning environment here: we help each other to learn.


  • We affirm a variety of learning styles beyond linear, analytical verbalization, sitting still for long periods, and passive learning.


  • We give descriptive feedback on observable behavior respectfully and do not label people by assuming we know their traits.


  • We celebrate and support expertise in a wide range of equally valid talents beyond narrow academic learning.


  • Learning can be hard work with tedious elements in any learning field, but, ultimately, creativity, exploration, and inner motivation are what we need to support and encourage.


A learning community also includes ongoing reflective dialog to assure that participants engage respectfully with each other within a values orientation that fosters taking good care of oneself, others, and nature, as well as, this learning center.
